Recently, the murders of several Indian students in American universities have made big news in India. Two students were shot dead at LSU in Baton Rouge in an unsolved crime. Another was murdered in North Carolina.
In Mumbai (Bombay), there was a serious gang crime problem in the 1990's. My uncle was a police official there. The response was to form dozens of small cells of officers called "encounter squads." Each encounter squad was armed with Chinese SKS clones (automatic rifle), a vest with iron plate over the chest, and a 9mm handgun.
They would dress casual, and lurk in areas with known criminal activity. Then upon sight of criminal action, they would burst forward and gun down all the participants. These shootings were always ruled justified by the coroner, because the coroner understood the process.
In the first 100 days of encounter squads, over 2,400 enemies were gunned down, and crime plunged.
I think this can work in the US also? Why not?
Of course, this should be even easier in the US, because police departments have more money for better weapons. Rather than cheap Chinese SKS clones, police can use high-quality H&K MP5 rifles, like commandos do in world militaries.
In the US the criminals are protected by a wide variety of laws, statutes and rights. Often the only protection victims receive is the dirt over their grave.
If the solution you offer was deemed legally justifiable, I would have zero problem with it. I deal with repeat violent offenders on a regular basis. With the continued economic "issues" the state's budget for corrections has been cut again resulting in less scum sentenced to jail time and more to "community corrections".
Last month we had a gang banger kill a 22 year old college grad. Banger was shooting at other bangers and grad gets hit by a stray bullet. Banger was still on the street despite being on probation for felon in possession of a handgun and felony menacing, and awaiting trial on six counts of armed robbery/felon in possession of a handgun/2nd degree assault with a deadly weapon etc….and people wonder why innocent people continue to die on America's streets.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackWell here in the United States people have the right to Due Process of law. Police are not allowed to play judge, jury and executioner.
Personally I don't like the idea of heavily armed people walking the street with a license to kill.

In the US, law enforcement cannot use deadly force and continue patrolling the next day. They are reassigned to a desk job while an investigation is conducted to determine if the officer's conduct was correct.
Several problems with allowing this to happen:
1) Gangs might fight back with equal force, leading to all out war in the streets
2) Mistakes will be made, either by targeting people that aren't a threat, or people that were innocent bystanders
3) Some of these officers will abuse their power
I think India's large population is why they have to do what they do; we don't have that issue in the US, and so we can respond differently.

Our current cumbersome legal system makes that virtually impossible. Criminals must be protected and afforded every legal benefit and right irregardless of what it costs the taxpayers!!

OMG, your not in BOMBAY, this is AMERICA
It is Absolutly NOT the solution to the Problem.
I honestly DO understand your Pain for the innocent Victims
"loss of lives @ the Universities", but we DO have a Judicial System we have to follow, whether you as an individual or a Country agree with it or not.
"We as a Whole", "A Country", "A Nation"
are NOT Radicals.
If everyone here acted as some of the Radicals do Internationally "we certainly wouldn't have so many ppl wanting to come here trying to flea that lifestyle".
These Students Fatalities were so unfortunate & unnecessary. My Heart & Prayers go out to them & their families. but… "having a shooting match is Not the Answer".
Not IN AMERICA. Just bacause a handful of jerks are vicious, does not mean that we as a Country are, or have to act like them by "shooting up the Streets. 2 wrongs don't make a right.
Our Country has been infiltrated & Mamed by Terrorists from the Mid East more then we could have ever thought possible, only for us to later learn
"They're Dancing with JOY in the streets for the Thousands MURDERED both here & there in the past decade.
Then to Behead our innocent Soldiers, "just boys" in Celebration of their actions, Do you really see this as justice?
I understand your anger, hurt & pain, but your answer is NOT the right one. I hope & pray I don't ever live to see that display of celebration here. There are always 3 sides to a story. "each opposing side" & the Judge's side. Our System will hear and handle circumstances and PUNISH accordingly, not as a "Do unto other" in the Streets.
As for those that have such disdane for America, No one is keeping them here, 'they can go as easily as they came'.
In acknowledgement of the Poor unfortunate Students /Victims, it's a total shame they had to have their lives cut so short & meet their final days with such Brutality, I have a Son & could only imagine how I'd feel if it were him. .
I personally offer my Sympathies & Condolences and again MY PRAYERS to their families. I will Not dance in the streets acting proud for their loss.
"We all will have our final day & have to answer for our actions, Those who are guilty, Their Day will come & they will pay dearly for their actions. Justice will prevail in the Correct practices of our System.
Please don't judge a Nation by a Handful. Stay Blessed & TC

It would work, but bleeding-hearts liberals would have a fit. I think we should reinstate cruel and unusual punishments, but no one listens to me.
