I am buying my first horse soon. He is a 5 yr old Arabian gelding. I ride hunter under saddle, dressage, and jumping. I plan on only doing local competitions, nothing serious, in those disciplines, plus halter. Here is my list of supplies, am I missing anything, or is anything here not necessary?
the barn supplies alfalfa hay, given to all the horses 2x a day, stalls, turnouts, arenas, jumps, trails, lunge line, lunge whip, saddle racks, halter/bridle racks, tack room, cross ties, grain buckets, waterers, maintence, etc.

ok you do not need:
a tail bag- if the horse is going to rub it's tail a tail bag will only help a little.
Medium twist snaffle bit for training- don't get it. first off you probably wont need it and second off a harsh bit is not the answer to your problems.
Leather breastplate for jumping/trails- only need it if your saddle slips back.
Training martingale- don't need it unless he was ridden in one previously
feed scoop (i will feed him grain a few times a week)- yea you need this but if he needs grain he needs it every day not just a few days a week.
lunging strap (holds up stirrups while lunging with a saddle on, not riding)- waste of money, just run the sturrips up and loop the leather through them works fine.
Quilted saddle pad for flat work and fleece saddle pad for jumping- you only need one saddle pad for flat work and jumping, You only need two if your going to show.
spurs- if you don't need them don't get them.
bridle/halter protective case- I have one and it's more of a pain in the butt to use than it helps.

may i recommend getting as much of this tack used. Got o tack sales, http://www.tacktrader.com, http://www.ebay.com, http://www.craigslist.com or look around at local shows and other events. That will save you a fortune! I have also found that http://www.horse.com has a variety of basic equipment for a VERY low price!

I think you have everything. However, if you want to show CC or jump it regularly I would recommend a crash vest.

yeah i think thats everything. but one way to save money would be to leave out the extras like the halter name plate, some of the show accessories, and stuff thats not the bare essentials or things like the measurement tape that maybe a friend at the barn has, and then only buy it if you absolutely need it.
also, i know some people at my barn use a stirrup leather instead of a lunging strap, and they use the same one from their english saddles so that saves them money. that might be an option.

the only thing I see is that you list a stable blanket.. if he is going to ever be turned out in the weather or will have a paddock attached to his stall, you will want to get a waterproof turnout blanket rather than a regular stable blanket. He can wear the waterproof turnout inside, but cannot wear the unwaterproof stable blanket out in the weather. Also, you might want a light weight sheet to keep him clean in between bathing and shows, and potentially a fly sheet to keep his coat from bleaching if he will be out at all during the day in the summer.
I didn't see tall hunt boots listed, will you wear paddock boots and half chaps to show?
I also do not think you should need a slow twist bit for training, I would stick to a basic snaffle.
If you are trying to save money, I just use cheap people shampoo for baths, and some of the stuff you listed, such as clippers, a separate bridle for trail riding, a chain for your lead rope, spurs, stable blanket, etc could be put off for a while as you potentially will not need spurs or a chained lead rope, and depending on where you live, if your horse hasn't been being blanketed, you may not need a blanket until next fall.
Also, tail bags do break tails.. I use old sheets braided in/wrapped around the tail to protect it.
Are you going to be taking lessons and showing with a trainer, 4-H club or pony club? If yes, I would take your list and talk to your instructor/leader/trainer/person in charge and see what they say, because often they will have certain products they prefer, types of bits, etc.
